We just wanted to let you know that our event for the month of May will be taking place very soon.  In fact, it will be on Friday, May 16 at 9:30pm.  We hope to see you there!

The fabulous and the talented flocked to Harbor House for our karaoke party, Guerrilla Idol.

The evening started quietly at 9:30 with a handful of people congregating toward the back of the bar.  As the night progressed, however, people started trickling at a regular pace until the bar was packed.

The bar owners were very happy to see us.  They offered us drink specials to show their gratitude: $2 Michelob Lights, $2 Pucker drinks, and one mighty strong $5 Long Island Iced Tea.  One bartender was overheard saying the Detroit Guerrilla Queer Bar should visit more often because we tip so well.  Well, that and because of our chic sense of style.

Our Guerrilla-goers were very microphone-shy at first, so Eddie and friends had to warm the crowd up by singing a variety of Kylie Minogue songs.  But once the alcohol kicked in, people were more receptive to take the mic and belt out a song.

Thanks for everyone who came out and braved the parking nightmare due to the Tigers game.  An extra special thanks to the token lesbians who joined us, as well.  Can’t wait to see everyone in May!

Don’t have any plans this Friday or Saturday evening? Then check out Wayne State’s 8th annual Moving Media student film festival.

Various judges from the Detroit area film community were deeply impressed with the quality of the work submitted, and as the judging progressed, they had a most difficult time ranking one film above another. Categories of films include narrative, documentary, music video and experimental.

Details are as follows:

Friday, May 9th - 6pm
Intro Classes Screening
150 General Lectures Building

Saturday, May 10th - 6pm
Advanced Classes Screening
Awards Ceremony
150 General Lectures Building

The event is free and open to the public and is held on Wayne State’s campus.

Guerrilla Idol 5

Harbor House
440 Clinton St.
Downtown Detroit
Friday, April 25 2008 - 9:30pm

It’s that time again. Get ready for Guerrilla Idol 5!  Join us Friday night at 9:30pm at Harbor House for karaoke!

Yes, everyone’s favorite… karaoke!

We’ll be heading to Harbor House this year instead of our usual obnoxious dive, Comet Bar.  We’ve heard that Comet Bar closed down and reopened with new owners.  So no longer is it like stepping into Hudsons’ Christmas window displays… only trashy… and with booze.  But now it’s like stepping into downriver… only trashier… and more heavy metal music.

Harbor House has a fairly decent selection of songs spanning every decade and genre, so you’ll be sure to find something that suits you.  Don’t worry, though, there won’t be an official panel of judges critiquing you. And you won’t have to sleep with anyone to get a chance to sing… unless you want to, that is.

And, of course, you don’t have to sing at all!

So muster up some liquid courage and bring yourself and some of your friends Friday night. You’ll have a great time. We promise. And if you don’t, we’ll sing you a special song, just for you.  But we’re sure you’ll have a great time, nonetheless.

Harbor House is located on Clinton Street right off of Gratiot, just around the corner from Detroit Pub. Parking is on the street, but that may be to a minimum, so we suggest the Greektown deck or nearby lots.

See you there!

Hey kids!  Our event for the month of April will be taking place on Friday the 25th at 9:30pm.  Be there or be square!

Well, well, it looks like a lot of you had nothing better to do for Spring Break this year, because our Spring Break road trip to the Emory in Ferndale was our biggest turnout yet!  The Detroit Guerrillas flooded this spacious tavern for the trendy to the point of some man-on-man action–which is usually something that doesn’t happen until AFTER the bar.

Lots of new faces showed up in Fashionable Ferndale–perhaps all those finicky suburban gays felt a little more comfortable in their own backyards, or perhaps it was the reduced risk of a DUI being so close to home.  But taking the Guerrillas to one of the burbs’ biggest gayborhoods definitely paid off, and we had the uncomfortably crowded bar with a line 5-deep to show for it.

Oh, but don’t get us wrong–a crowd like that is a compliment, letting us know that the Detroit Guerrillas really have made it.  Well, that and our first piece of hatemail, which we received in reference to our invite for this month.  THAT’s how we REALLY know!

Another plus: it was at this event, our first OUTing outside of the city, that we coined our official Detroit Guerrilla Queer Bar Slogan: “Hundreds of Gay Men.  And One Lesbian.”

Hey folks!  We recently transferred to a new server and, so far, everything has gone smoothly.  However, if you notice anything out of place, please let us know.  Thanks!

Spring Break Road Trip

The Emory
22700 Woodward Avenue
Downtown Ferndale
Friday, March 14 2008 - 9:00pm

Hey bitches! It’s Spring Break and that means we’re going on our first road trip! No, we’re not going to Senior Frog’s in Cancun… we’re headed for the suburbs - Ferndale, in fact! Yes, we’re leaving the city limits for the very first time.

Join us this Friday night, March 14, at 9:00pm (prompt) as we invade The Emory!

Promptly, you ask? Yes. We’re aware that this spot is quite the happening place for the hetero-kind, and we want to make sure that we have a visable presence to prevent the place becoming breeder haven. So please try to show up as closely to the start time as possible. Think of it as a starter before ending the evening down the street at 9.

There is a huge selection of alcoholic beverages, wine and beer for you to try or, perhaps, if you’re a little hungry, show up a little early to grab a bite to eat. The food is all the rage.

And if you haven’t been to a Detroit Guerrilla Queer Bar event, now is the perfect time to check out what all the fun is about… we’re in Fashionable Ferndale this month - no fear of being gunned down like a stripper at a party in Detroit.

The Emory is located at the northeast corner of Woodward and Troy. Parking is available on the street as well as lots behind the streetfront retail.

Hope to see you and your friends there!
